YAPC::EU 2016, The Perl Conference.

I recently attended the Europan Perl Conference, YAPC::EU.

This was held in Cluj-Napoca in Romania and was a brilliant experience and I’d like to thank everyone involved in putting the event together, running it and the participants that made it such an enjoyable event for me.

I was fortunate to be accepted to speak at the event and spoke in the main auditorium on the subject:

Refactoring with Statsd, Toggle and Scientist”

The talk is an overview of many of the ideas and development principles the team of developers I work with have adopted over time. As I say in the talk, we have built strategies to make it possible for us to reliably refactor legacy code by obeying these rules:

  • If you can’t test it, don’t refactor it.
  • If you can’t measure it, don’t refactor it.
  • If you can’t turn it off and on, don’t refactor it.

It was my first YAPC and I am already planning for and looking forward to the 2017 edition in Amsterdam.
